How much does a translation cost?

I am unable to quote a fixed price here, as the translation costs

usually vary depending on the following aspects:

  • Text volume

  • Degree of specialisation of the text

  • Research effort

  • Deadline

  • Formatting effort, e.g. for non-editable file formats like PDF

  • Intended use and target group

I would be delighted to provide you with a free and non-binding

quotation for your translation or for one of my other services.

What information do you need for a quotation or to process an order?

Please send me your text to be translated by e-mail, preferably in an editable file format such as Microsoft Word, and state your desired delivery date.

Additional information that may be helpful for me includes details of the subject area, intended use, target group, file format and any special features (layout, illustrations, tables).

In general, the following points are helpful to ensure the efficient processing of your order:

  • Providing an understandable, editable source text

  • Naming a contact person for content/terminology queries

  • Providing your company terminology

  • Providing reference material

  • Providing abbreviation lists

  • Providing illustrations

  • Providing a style guide

  • Setting a reasonable delivery deadline

  • Providing feedback after viewing the translation

How long does a translation or revision take?

On average, I translate about 1,800 words per working day. However, this can sometimes be more or less, depending on the quality and level of technical language of the respective source text and the amount of research work involved.

Revision work is priced based on a throughput of around 1,200 words per hour. This number again depends on the translation quality.

Do you also process rush orders?

For urgent projects, I can also provide support outside normal business hours, at the weekend or on holidays if necessary. However, this must be clarified beforehand in each case.

Please bear in mind that the price quoted will be higher in these cases.

Do you also work in other subject areas?

I am always interested in familiarising myself with new subject areas. I consider continuous further training as one of the most important aspects of my profession. Strong research skills are an indispensable tool for any technical translator. For each enquiry, I check whether I can complete the translation to your satisfaction in the relevant subject area and how long it will take to complete. Moreover, if you provide me with glossaries and reference material, this will enable me to process your order more efficiently.

Please note: The fact that a translator may sometimes have queries about the source text, be it in a familiar or unfamiliar subject area, is a sign of conscientiousness and professionalism and in no way a cause for concern. Linguistic, terminology and technical queries as well as comments from the translator can not only help make the source text easier to understand, but also improve the quality of the translation.

Can you also help me with an interpreting assignment?

Translator and interpreter are two different professions. Interpreters translate oral statements into another language, while translators translate written texts.

Since I work as a translator, I only offer language services for written texts.

However, you can find qualified interpreters in the member database of the German Professional Association of Interpreters and Translators (BDÜ).
